Absolutely stunning, yes? This 100M underwent a comprehensive photo-documented all-apart bare metal ground-up restoration by British Motor Company of Philadelphia in 2007-2008, including a full rebuild of the original body, (14380), engine (1B/233253) and 4-speed with overdrive manual transmission, electrical system, frame and suspension.
Since restoration, German Concepts of Osceola, IN has regularly serviced and maintained this “M”. Except when driven to shows and meets this treasure has been kept in a temperature controlled and secure garage that was built specifically for this car.
Most recently, our shop completed a comprehensive refresh of this gem which boasts 1911 miles since restoration with just a few of those added since our refresh. Is she perfect? No. Short of achieving perfection, what’s needed? Not a thing.
Originally built for North American Export this original left-hand drive unit was factory-finished as it is today, with its “M” equipment, duotone Black and Reno Red paint with Red trim, Black top, wire wheels, heater, laminated windscreen, and louvered bonnet.
Three owners from new, with current long-term ownership since 1962, this “M”, (#BN2-L/233253) is one of 640 genuine factory-built 100M “Le Mans” units built by Austin-Healey, complete with its British Motor Industry Heritage Trust Certificate. The Austin-Healey 100M Le Mans Registry used to require an annual renewal. This car was in the Registry back then, its renewal lapsed but is in the process of being reinstated with its “lifetime” certification. Available photos show critical stamping, castings, and etchings - evidence used for Registry’s review and approval – specifics that highlight how exceptionally original and authentic this example is.
Beyond all the above, what makes a 100M so special? Simply put, a 100M is an icon; a must-have for US club racers of the era; performance-built by the factory to honor its 3rd place overall Le Mans finish in 1955; and a true-M is a collector’s choice today.
But there’s more; the real guts behind the looks and glory. Like our unit, each factory-built 100M was delivered with performance enhancing features like, larger carbs, better/colder engine air flow – from the safety-strapped louvered hood to the filter-less alloy air intake box; with internals including a high-lift performance cam, double valve springs, and high compression pistons; add a high-output distributor and a tweaked automatic advance – all delivering 20 more HP. And yes, the alloy airbox has “the” placard attached attesting to it all.
That’s all great but factory 100Ms had even more; stiffer front lever-arm dampers were installed along with a forward-mounted racing-rated anti-roll bar, and 11 x 2.25-inch drum brakes to bring things to a stop.
Points of interest:
• In 1954 the UK mandated the addition of rear reflectors. These were optional for units shipped outside the UK. Some 100s were shipped to the US with the reflectors and some weren’t. US dealers could also install them. This 100M arrived without the reflectors or assemblies and remains as-built. HOWEVER, we have them if you wish them.
• The “M” emblem found on the front grille of a factory 100 badge is wired in place, as ours is. The “M’ can be mounted anywhere but is typically located to the right of the “100” on the lightning bolt. Ours was place at the end of the bolt and has been relocated to its traditional spot.
• Factory brochures don’t show any dash placard mounted to the dash of a 100M. However, placards like ours – matching the alloy air intake box placard - A-H Registry placards are often dash mounted.
• A 12-volt alternator is installed in this 100M. It’s rebuildable original generator comes with the car.
Yes, there are aftermarket variants with some or all the above upgrades. Yes, Austin-Healey authorized and supplied “M” upgrade kits. Yes, A-H was delighted to satisfy all who valued these exciting upgrades.
But, when it comes down to it, there are real factory “M” cars and there are all others.
So, if you are seeking a true, authentic, documented, freshly finished, original color, trim, engine, transmission Austin-Healey 100M, give us a call. We think you will be delighted.
